Vibes Alone at National Scout Youth Awards

Vibes was the theme for National Scout Commissioner (NSC), Roger Berkeley as he addressed the youth at the Presentation of the National Scout Youth Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 5th July, 2016 at the auditorium at San Fernando City Hall.

At the annual event, hosted by His Excellency Anthony Carmona, President and Chief Scout of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, a total of 97 youth members of the Scout Association of Trinidad and Tobago earned the highest award in their respective sections; President’s Pack Award in the Cub Scout Section, Chief Scout Award in the Scout Section and the President’s Scout Award in the Venture Scout Section.

During his speech, the NSC reiterated his mission to make ScoutsTT a movement not only of youth but for youth, and recognised a few of the exceptional young people he met over the past year:

  • Siddeeq Shakoor – who after attending the Inter-American Regional Leadership Training (ILT) was awarded a scholarship by the Boy Scouts of America to attend their National Youth Leadership Training in August of this year and was invited to join the staff for the 2016 ILT in Guatemala;
  • Keeshan Ramkissoon – the newly appointed Acting District Commissioner for the San Juan District, who at 24 years old is the youngest person appointed to that position in over 20 years;
  • and Patrick Welch – the dynamic, creative and active GSL of 1st Goodwood Air Scouts in Tobago, whose determination has resulted in one of the best run programmes anywhere in the country.

Berkeley committed to the young people that they will find in ScoutsTT, “a movement that will engage, embrace and challenge them to be all they can be,” before closing with a surprise performance by young soca star Aaron Duncan, who had the audience waving to his 2016 hit “Can You Feel It.”

Other musical performances on the day were done by Jeremy Macintyre of 1st Queen’s Royal College Scout Group, Tishanna Stoute – Cub Scout Leader at 6th Point Fortin Sea Scouts and the Queen’s Royal College Scout Band.

President Carmona was pleased with the entertainment showcased and vowed to invite the talented scouts to perform at other functions hosted by his office.
