Youth members of the Scout Association of Trinidad and Tobago from all twenty scout districts were invited to the National Scouts Youth Forum at Scout Headquarters, St. Ann’s on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th August 2016. The aim of the forum was to provide a platform to effectively address issues facing our Movement locally and to give participants the opportunity to make decisions to address those issues.
The National Youth Forum, sponsored by Pizza Boys, was the first of its kind in over ten years, which is a testament to ScoutsTT’s renewed drive to make itself a movement not only of youth but for youth. Another key component of this effort is the recent appointment of young persons to various commissioner posts, including the Association’s first ever National Youth Commissioner.
The twenty-five participants came from groups all around the country, representing districts from North, Central, South and Tobago. Over the two days they discussed issues such as Barriers to Youth Involvement in Scouting, Youth Advocacy, Youth in Decision Making, and Youth Programme Review.
Following the presentations and discussions, the representatives of the new National Youth Council were elected as well as the Executive of the Council, which is as follows: Chairman - Damian Clarke; Vice Chairman - Mohini Seejattan; Programme - Patrick Welch; Training - Siddeeq Shakoor; Advocacy - Jeremy Macintyre; Communication - Acquille Simmons.
National Scout Commissioner, Roger N.C. Berkeley, in his closing remarks reminded the young scouts that the future of Scouting lies in their hands and encouraged them to make the change they wish to see.
