Remembering Our Brother, Lalman Nanan

It is not every day that the world is blessed by a teacher as compassionate and caring, a leader as humble and committed and a person as loving and caring for his family, friends and community as Mr. Lalman Nanan.

This is a tribute to a highly respected man who has impacted the lives of many with whom he has crossed paths in his capacity as a teacher and principal and as a true scout leader, he dedicated his life to the service of others, developing character in young people.

Lal, as he was fondly known, got his start in scouting as a Cub Scout at the 1st Gasparillo Scout Group. He then moved onto 1st Naparima College Scouts, where he became Senior Patrol Leader.  In 1966 he founded the 2nd Bonne Aventure Scout Troop in his home village of Bonne Aventure, where he was well-known as a community elder up until his passing.

Mr. Nanan’s contribution to Scouting in Trinidad and Tobago did not end there, he served in several positions for the Scout Association of Trinidad and Tobago including: Assistant District Commissioner and later District Commissioner (Pointe-a-Pierre District), Headquarters Commissioner for Scouts, National Training Commissioner, Deputy National Scout Commissioner for Adult Resources and Training and head of the National Training Team.

He will always be remembered as a kind-hearted gentleman, an exemplar who lived by his words, encouraging everyone to help someone be a better person every day. The Scout Association of Trinidad and Tobago extends our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Lalman Nanan. May his soul rest in peace.
